We’re hiring people from diverse backgrounds who bring analytic rigor, creative energy, and focus on impact. Join us.
Our Work
Our projects range in scale from buildings to neighborhoods, public parks to infrastructure systems, program design and management to policy development and implementation in cities across the country and around the world.
We care about improving the quality of urban life, and we are increasingly focused on the challenges of inclusivity, infrastructure, and technological innovation in cities. We advance public-private development projects and policy initiatives that improve economic, environmental, and social outcomes for communities of all sizes.
Our Culture
We are former public servants, urban planners, designers, city officials, activists, real estate developers and economists. We create value for our clients by integrating multiple disciplines and leading teams with architects, engineers, lawyers, community organizers, and other specialists.
Nearly everything we do is a team effort, internally, with other professional services firms, and clients. Collaboration, trust, and integrity are important components of our culture. This sense of team extends to our ownership structure: we are 100% employee-owned. Our staff is data-driven, creative, and dedicated.
We believe in and support our employees’ growth and advancement. Many of the firm’s senior leaders started off as analysts. Within our collaborative work environment employees learn new skills and earn additional responsibilities. In addition to a supportive work environment, HR&A offers an annual stipend to assist in professional development.
HR&A values a diverse workforce where we benefit from different life experiences and perspectives. We are an equal opportunity employer and committed to maintaining a workplace free of discrimination, sexual harassment or other harassment based on race, color, ethnicity, religion, creed, national origin, citizenship, immigration status, ancestry, age, medical condition, physical or mental disability or perceived disability, genetic information or characteristic, military or veteran status, political affiliation, marital status, reproductive choices, sexual orientation, sex (including gender, gender identity, gender expression, gender transition, pregnancy, childbirth and medical conditions related to pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding), or any other category or characteristic protected by applicable federal, state or local laws.
Benefits
We often like to think that the greatest benefit of working at HR&A is our project work – it’s our dedication to delivering meaningful improvements to the built environment and urban life that drives our desire to come to work each morning and travel to clients around the world. We also offer competitive salaries, year-end bonuses, and a range of benefits to individuals and their families:
Wealth-building
We are an employee-owned company that cares about the long-term. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in our Employee Stock Ownership Plan, and we also make contributions to individually-managed 401(k) retirement accounts. HR&A has company paid Life Insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance. Employees can elect coverage of additional insurance coverage.
Healthcare
We cover 90-95% of medical and dental insurance premiums for you and your family, with multiple plans to choose from, including premium plans with coverage for a range of non-standard services.
Family Planning
HR&A provides up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for birth or adoption of a child. We also provide fertility benefits and adoption assistance to all full-time employees with one year of tenure.
Flexible Benefits
Employees have access to a variety of tax-free spending accounts, including flexible spending accounts for healthcare, childcare and other dependent care, and public transit.
Student Loan Assistance
Employees who have received a graduate or undergraduate degree can apply for HR&A’s student loan assistance. New employees are eligible after 6 months of continuous employment with the firm.
Wellness
Supporting our employees’ overall wellness is critically important for our culture and business. That’s why we provide an annual $500 stipend to cover a range of wellness products and services — from yoga classes to stress-reduction coloring books to exercise equipment and more. Additionally, our Wellness Health Benefits also include up to three free sessions with a licensed therapist, as well as free access to guided meditations, resilience support, articles, and more.
Professional Development
We believe in the continual education and growth of our talent. We train staff in real estate finance, economic and social impact, spatial analysis and more, host talks with urban development leaders, and sponsor staff participation in conferences and professional development events and networks. HR&A offers an annual stipend for continued professional development.
Mentorship
HR&A engages in a mentorship program to support new and junior staff by pairing them with a Partner Mentor, Cohort Advisor, and a Peer. Each individual will have the opportunity to engage with others across the firm, learn how to navigate and grow within HR&A.
Time Off
Employees have at least 20 days of paid time off each year, in addition to paid sick leave.
Travel
Staff at all levels have opportunities to travel between our five offices and to project sites, allowing us all to experience communities and cultures across the country and around the world firsthand. Note: Until the pandemic is under control, all business travel is prohibited.
Offices
We take pride in our office spaces – they’re designed by award-winning architects and located in some of the most vibrant neighborhoods of New York City, Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, Raleigh, and Washington, DC. Meetings in and around nearby parks and over coffee in neighborhood coffeeshops are daily occurrences.
